Breaking Even

About 2.5 years ago we bought a hybrid, a Toyota Prius named Sparky to be exact. And we love it (not he, not she, it). And I’ve tried doing the math to determine how long we would have to drive it before we start saving money on the car. Since it does cost more than other cars, I figured it would be a lot of gas mileage before we broke even. And the price of gas has climbed consistently over the last 2.5 years so we’re currently paying somewhere around $3.25 a gallon.

So when I was checking out Rebecca’s website and saw an article that said that if you drive about 15,000 miles a year in a hybrid you finally start to save money on your investment. I’d come up with 56,000 miles when we first got the car, but since CNN.com is far more reliable than my math, I’m going to go with their math.

Which means that we started saving money last year. Woot!
